Bragging rights for Uffington with derby win
UFFINGTON won local bragging rights with a two wicket victory against Stamford 2nds on Sunday.
The win consolidated their position at the top of division 5 of the Rutland League but it was a hard fought battle.
Stamford batted first and after some fine early strokes from Chris Bore in his 32, it started to look an easy win was coming for the home side as Stamford slumped to 60-6 thanks to some fine bowling from Ben Jennings, who eventually took 5-49.
But the town side fought back with Neil Williams (82) and Hudson Batty (25) leading the visitors to a useful total of 186 all out.
Uffington’s reply was initially cautious with Ant Morris playing the anchor role while John Clarke kept the board ticking for 39 but as wickets fell it took an excellent 51 from Morris and the experience of Simon Larter (33) to see Uffington home with only one wicket and 1.2 overs remaining.
l Stamford’s first team maintained their lead at the summit of the South Lincolnshire and Border League’s third division with an easy victory at Blankney on Saturday.
Town bowled out the home side for just 110, with Richard Field, returning figures of 4 for 22, from 10 overs, and fellow spinner Josh Prentice taking 2 for 8.
Stamford once again picked up maximum points with emerging star Andrew Hulme, unbeaten on 63, after Chris Bore had pummelled 46 at the top of the order.
l The Stamford Saturday 2nd Xl lost their first Grantham League match in two years, losing by four wickets, after being skittled out for just 83 at home, by Barrowby.
Only Jon Morley (45) made any worthwhile contribution with the bat, and, despite taking early wickets, with Chris Birch claiming 3 for 18, and Johnny Williams 2 for 34, the visitors won with four wickets in hand.
l Stamford Town lost out in a high-scoring match at Stewart and Lloyds, in the John Wilcox Cup, going down by four wickets, with just one ball remaining.
Openers Andrew Hulme(50) and Bryan Bennett (57) along with Liam Dave (60) got Town off to a great start as Stamford batted to 255 for 6 from 50 overs.
It was looking good for Town when S&L lost three early wickets through some excellent bowling from Brett Bennett (2 for 46), Richard Field (1 for 36) and Bill Hall (1 for 33), but the home side's middle order flourished, with 15-year-old Alderson winning a great game on the penultimate ball.
