Chuck leads Braunston's charge
THERE is a familiar shape to Division One of the Stamford and Rutland League at the halfway point of the regular season.
Leaders Yaxley secured an 8-2 win at Bourne B and also earned a 9-1 victory at bottom club Stamford Free Church.
Braunston A's Chuck Kershaw is leading his team towards challenging for the runners-up spot in the division.
His unbeaten evening against early season pacesetters Bourne A enabled Braunston to earn a draw.
Rod Goss and Mike Willis each won twice for the visitors in a close match where five of the rubbers went to a fifth end.
Bourne A did enjoy outright victory over Braunston's 'B team.
Goss and Willis again played well to remain unbeaten and leave Braunston perilously close to the basement.
Braunston B did, however, win the battle of the bottom two as a 7-3 victory over Stamford Free Church was their first victory of the season.
Peter O'Gorman continued his consistent season with a full house and Edmund Dry also won twice.
Geoff Moores earned two wins for Free Church, but they will be ever more determined to win a match in the second half of the season.
Stamford School's match with championship challengers MTTG was interrupted by a power black-out, resulting in the doubles having to be conceded by the School.
MTTG had secured the victory by this point with Chris Weston unbeaten and Andy Goodacre a double winner, but Leigh Ware had answered with two wins himself in a competitive and enjoyable contest.
Due to a parents evening, a youthful School team travelled to Braunston A and suffered a 10-0 reverse.
The boys played encouragingly, but Kershaw together with Graham and Gary Cooper proved too strong.
Bourne C remain unbeaten in Division Two and have eased up to second in the table - they look favourites to secure the title in April.
This week they defeated close rivals Braunston C 6-4 with Kevin Day and Harry Jackson each winning twice before confirming victory in the doubles.
Mike Ramsden won twice for Braunston, but it wasn't quite enough to prevent a first reverse for them.
Bourne then defeated Dyke 9-1 with Ziggy Poberezniuk and Clive Jackson winning all of their singles matches. Day picked up another two wins to continue his consistent season.
Chris Morgan was the star of Bourne E's win against Tallington.
His unbeaten evening, together with Kevin Greenfield's brace, ensured victory despite Michael Dinwoodie's promising performance for the villagers.
Bourne's second victory of the week was at Oakham School B. Morgan and Greenfield again won their matches to improve their personal averages.
The one draw of the week also involved Bourne E as they played MTTG II.
On this occasion it was Greenfield who was unbeaten and Morgan who won twice.
Jodie Walton replied with two wins and grabbed the draw with a close doubles win with Abi Cramp.
Tallington suffered a second reverse at the hands of Uffington CC.
Brendan Alston enjoyed three wins and he was well supported by Graham Rawlinson. Richard Allen replied twice for Tallington.
A consistent team performance from Dyke resulted in a close-fought victory over Bourne D.
Simon Jolley and John Taylor each won twice for Dyke and these wins proved vital as Sam Wooding was undefeated for Bourne.
The remaining two matches were played out between the Oakham School sides.
The A team proved too strong for their B team counterparts, dropping just one rubber in the second of these.
George Tacey and Dickson Wong each won their six matches while James Henley joined them with a full house in the first match. Jeff Tam picked up a couple of wins in the second encounter.
