WILL Stuart-Jones struck an excellent 112 for Oakham as they earned a winning draw at home to Ibstock on Saturday.
Up against an Ibstock side who are languishing at the bottom of Division 3 in the Everards Leicestershire League, Oakham batted first and lost Sam Wills early on.
But Stuart-Jones was settled at the crease and joined by 15-year-old Albert Radford who batted well for a solid 46 before being needlessly run out. Two more wickets fell before Chris Larsen joined centurion Stuart-Jones and together they took the score past 200 before Stuart-Jones was finally dismissed.
Larsen continued to attack the bowling taking the score to 268-6 and finished on 52 not out.
Oakham’s bowlers took an early wicket but strong resistance came from S Taylor (38) and M Clarke (67) before Radford removed Clarke.
This dismissal led to a mini-collapse with three more wickets falling for five runs before M McAllister (50) stabilised the innings and took the score to 200.
Isaac Smith then got to work claiming four wickets for 14 in his four over second spell. However, a dropped catch and stout resistance from the final pair saw Ibstock hang on for the losing draw finishing on 219-9.
Oakham claimed 18 points to increase the gap between them and the bottom club to 60 but should really have taken the full 24 pts from this game.
Oakham host division leaders Enderby at the Lime Kilns on Saturday. The match starts at 1.30pm.
