Oakham 1st XI needed a good win against Shepshed Messengers and that’s what they got on Saturday.
In the Leicestershire League division three clash, skipper Matt Osman won the toss and put the opposition in even though the Lime Kilns track was hard and the outfield lightening fast.
This tactic looked to have backfired as Shepshed opener Kershaw blasted a rapid 72 runs but he lacked support and the introduction of spinners Jame Oakley (3-44) and skipper Osman (3-7) quickly wrapped up the Shepshed innings, 148 all out.
Oakham’s reply stuttered in the early stages but Jamie McCormack with a rapid 66 in 49 balls ensured the result was never in doubt and Oakham ran out winners by five wickets finishing 149-5.
* Oakham’s 2nds enjoyed a one-sided a affair against Shepshed Messengers in division seven of with a number of the opposition looking as though they had not played cricket before!
Only an anchorman role from opposition skipper, Mitchell (55no) ensured Shepshed reached a respectable total of 124-8.
Veteran spinner Bob Inchley was the leading Oakham bowler finishing with 4-27. Despite the early loss of skipper Graeme Cooper Oakham cruised to victory by 9 wickets with Freddie Turner (56 not out) and Mazz Edge (29 not out) seeing the side to a comprehensive victory.
* Rory Brown’s side Sunday 1sts travelled to Newborough desperately needing a win to kickstart their annual battle against relegation.
Despite missing a number of leading players the makeshift side put in a good performance.
Batting first contributions all down the order saw Oakham reach 189-8 with a fine 9th wicket partnership between Joe Lemon (33 not out) and Dave Falconer (19 not out) the highlight ogf the innings.
Pick of the opposition bowlers was Andrew Rowlands with 4-13.
In reply Newborough never got going against some tight Oakham seam and spin bowling and they were dismissed for 137 leaving Oakham victors by 52 runs. Wickets were shared amongst the Oakham attack with Ben Lemon, Dave Falconer, Albert Radford all taking two and man of the match Joe Lemon clearing up the tail with 3-28.
This victory lifts the side off the bottom division two in the Rutland league and only two points away from escaping the relegation zone!
