CRICKET: Skipper's century leads victory for Oakham
OAKHAM Sunday 2nd XI captain Andrew Counsell hit an unbeaten century against Barnack on Sunday, helping his side to a 77 run victory in Rutland League Division 6.
It was the second victory in two days for the 2nds who saw off league leaders Heckington in the South Lincs and Border Division one match at the Lime Kilns on Saturday.
Bowler Matt Osman was among the heroes on Saturday and tied down Heckington batsmen with 4 wickets for 37 off 9 overs.
But on Sunday it was Counsell's innings that stole the show against Barnack 2nds.
Oakham had been reduced to 16-2 inside 8 overs when Counsell came to the wicket. Alongside Nick Halliwell (26) the innings was stabilised and when Oakham needed to up the run rate Counsell lashed out with shots including a six that left the ground.
His partnership with Jamie Oakley (18) added 60 in 10 overs and after Oakley was caught out, the skipper marshalled the lower order to an excellent total of 223-8 with his first century for Oakham a hard fought 103 not out.
The pick of the Barnack bowlers was Jones with 3-37 from his 12 overs.
Oakham secured all 20 pts and after the game Counsell said: "This was a good win in the end but we struggled to impose ourselves at times with some inconsistent batting, bowling and catching – 6 or 7 chances went down – but it was good to see U17 players from both club junior teams and local schools making significant contributions with bat and ball."
l The bowlers quickly claimed wickets against Heckington with the young pairing of Isaac Smith and Alfonso Stafford giving Oakham the early momentum.
Alongside spinner Matt Osman's 4 wicket haul for a modest 37, Graham Cooper who took three wickets in four balls, helping to see off Heckington for 121 off 27 overs.
Captain of the Saturday 2nd XI, Loz Green said: "It was a great performance by all players and good to bring the young blood through into senior cricket."
