CRICKET: Uppingham face a tough end to season

Have your say

UPPINGHAM Town sit precariously above the bottom two sides, Stamford and Market Overton, with just two tough games to play in the Rutland League First Division this summer.

Town still have to play title-challengers Bourne and third-placed Oundle, and the Rutland side’s cause wasn’t helped at Peterborough where inconsistent batting proved costly once again yesterday afternoon.

Uppingham, as has been the norm this summer, lost the toss and Peterborough batted first but Uppingham’s attack made a good start.

The city side’s opening batsmen found it difficult to score runs against tight bowling from Stu Lambie (1 for 28) and Colan Bartram (1 for 22), and after 11 overs Peterborough had lost their two opening bats for just 26 runs. At 25 overs Uppingham had taken four wickets for 82 runs and looked to be containing the strong Peterborough batting but Michael Cafferkey (52) and Alex Mitchell (73no) batted superbly with excellent running between the wickets to give Peterborough a final score of 210 runs from their 45 overs.

Uppingham used seven bowlers, all performing well, but wickets were hard to come by and Peterborough lost just five with Town’s young Jack Godfrey unlucky to have two catches dropped during a six over spell on his first team debut.

In reply, Uppingham opened with Jamie Dumford (17) and Adi Salt (56) giving Town an excellent opening partnership of 46 runs for the first wicket but from there onwards the Uppingham batting struggled. Salt lost his wicket, caught and bowled by Callum French), with Uppingham’s score at 94 for 4 but then six wickets fell for just 31 runs.

Peterborough used six bowlers with French taking 5 for 37, Bashrat Hussain and Rob Sayer both claiming two wickets and Matt Milner a single scalp as Uppingham were bowled out for 125 runs.
