Thakor named U19 England captain

Cricketer Shiv Thakor, who left Uppingham School in the summer, has been named captain of England’s U19 team that will play two four-day Tests and five one-day internationals in South Africa early next year.

The Tests will be in Cape Town from January 27 and Paarl from February 3. The first one-day game is on February 13 and the last eight days later.

The tour is the initial part of the preparation for the U19 World Cup in February 2014.

Coach Tim Boon said: “Shiv Thakor of Leicestershire has been appointed tour captain and is one of three under 19 players.”

This autumn, Shiv agreed a new two-year contract with Leicestershire County Cricket Club. The teenager made a successful step up to first-team cricket at Grace Road last season, topping the batting averages in the County Championship on a summer contract while he was at the School.

He has represented England at various levels, and became the first Leicestershire-born player to score a century on his first class debut for the county.
