Crunch clash in race to reach play-offs
STAMFORD take on the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, this evening in a key clash in the race for play-off places.
The fifth-placed Daniels take on the side one place and point above them in a rare Friday night game after two weeks of frustration.
Last Saturday’s trip to Leek Town was cancelled because of snow and even Stamford’s back-up plan – a friendly against UCL side Holbeach United – was called off because of ice on the synthetic surface at Sleaford.
Daniels boss Tommy Brookbanks said: “Peterborough are at home on Saturday and hopefully by playing on Friday night we will get a few more fans down to watch.
“It’s a big game for both clubs and hopefully we’ll get a good crowd behind us. We will be going out to win as we always do and they are a strong side so it should be a good game. If we win it will put us in a very good position.”
Stamford have no fresh injury worries ahead of tonight’s game and have brought in Jarod Holmes to further strengthen the squad.
Brookbanks said: “He was with me at Carlton when we were in the play-offs and then he joined me at Hucknall.
“He’s a good, creative midfielder and we need the squad bolstering as we’ll be squeezing 14 games into March and April.”
This evening’s visitors to the Premier Kitchens Arena have shown similar form to Stamford all season with little to read into their last three results other than goals could be on the cards.
At least five goals were scored in each game – a 3-2 victory against Hucknall, a 4-1 defeat at Ilkeston and 3-3 draw with Sutton Coldfield – and the men to watch out for are top scorer Conor Higginson with 10 league goals and Andy Gascoigne with eight. This evening’s match kicks off at 7.45pm.
Last Saturday’s cancelled game at Leek has been re-arranged for March 20 with a 7.45pm kick-off.
Despite the fixture backlog, Brookbanks is hoping to have a friendly match lined up for Tuesday evening to give players recovering from injury and fringe players some match time.
