Daniels' delight at big name signing

STAMFORD manager Tuncay Korkmaz has toasted one of the biggest signings in Daniels history.

Korkmaz continued his radical overhaul at the Vic Couzens Stadium by capturing Peterborough United legend David Farrell earlier this week.

The 37-year-old becomes the fourth new recruit to move from Boston United this summer – following in the footsteps of keeper Chris Wright, player-coach Ben Sedgemore and striker Danny Matson.

Korkmaz expects Farrell to be a key figure both on and off the pitch.

He said: "David is certainly a big-name signing for a club like Stamford. There will obviously be a lot of expectation and I feel sure he will be a great player for us on the pitch as well as an excellent figure off it.

"Some of the young players in our squad will no doubt have watched him playing for Posh in the past and I feel they will benefit a lot from the presence of vastly experienced players like him and Ben Sedgemore in the dressing room.

"David still has a lot of football left in his legs and he feels he is good enough to give it a go at Stamford."

Watch David Farrell hat trick

Farrell, who combines his football with a job as a lecturer at Boston College, was a regular for Boston in the UniBond Premier Division last season until being struck down by a couple of injuries late in the campaign.

He believes he still possesses the attributes that made him such a big hit for nine years at London Road where his rocket-heeled runs and penchant for scoring spectacular goals wowed the fans.

Farrell told the Mercury: "Footballers are always going to lose a bit of their edge as they get older, but I don't feel as though I have slowed down.

"I definitely don't think I have lost my pace, but I can't use it quite as regularly any more. I can't still do it 15 times a game like Barry Fry used to want at Posh!

"I know a few of the lads at Stamford and I'm really looking forward to getting going. I'm really pleased to be able to join a relatively local club which was important to me at this stage of my career.

"I did talk to a couple of other clubs further away, but I'm very happy to be at Stamford and I'm still loving my football just as much as I have always done. I haven't even thought about packing up."

Korkmaz has also persauded left-back Andy Ellis to move across from his former club, Deeping Rangers.

He added: "I did have some issues on the left side but bringing in Andy and David will certainly sort those out."

Korkmaz is still on the lookout for a central defender with Shaun Pearson likely to move onto higher-level football.
