Evison rolls back the years

GARETH Evison rolled back the years to hit a magnificent 81 for Bourne 2nds in his first game in seven years on Saturday.

Former Bourne 1st captain Evision retired from cricket in 2002 through injury but after a desperate call from club stalwart David Christmas stepped out once more for the town.

Evison, 37, who insists the game was a one-off cameo performance, said yesterday: "I did enjoy it but at times I could feel it. I am still not moving properly today.

"I played for Bourne since I was 11 but hurt my back in June 2002 and had never played since – but the team was short and there was a desperate call."

Evison, who now coaches Bourne's under 9 and under 11 sides, added: "The only bat I have picked up in recent years is a blue plastic one with the youth sides. The real thing felt like it was made from lead.

"I am a bit of a grinder of runs and didn't do a lot of running on Saturday."

Despite his comeback innings, Sleaford 2nds won the South Lincs and Border League Division One fixture by four wickets.

Bourne batted first but apart from Evision and Jeffrey Gunthorpe, Bourne's batsmen struggled against economical bowling from Sleaford finishing on 161-5.

In reply Sleaford hit 162-6 with James Rickett hitting 56 not out. Mark Gunthorp was the pick of the Bourne bowlers taking three wickets for measley 23 runs off his 12 overs.

Bourne 2nds are currently propping up the table and Evison said: "The seconds are a real mix of youth and experience and are coming up against a lot of first teams, but there are good players and prospects."

In the Rutland League Bourne won by 58 runs after getting off to a flier against Uppingham.

Batting first Craig Williams hit an unbeaten 102 and Tom Bentley scored 53 as Bourne hit 220 for 3.

Uppingham could only manage 162 in reply as bowlers Charlie Hopkins 3 for 37, Tom Bentley 3 for 41 and Adam Binns 2 for 22 ripped through the Uppingham innings.
