Fifth Burghley win for Fox-Pitt

WILLIAM Fox-Pitt took the plaudits at the Burghley Horse Trials for a record-equalling fifth time on Sunday.

His mount Tamarillo followed up a flawless display in the difficult cross-country section with a neat show-jumping routine.

He has now joined equestrian greats Ginny Elliott and Mark Todd in the record books after winning for a fifth time.

Fox-Pitt also placed second with his other horse Ballincoola. The top six riders were all British - Mary King taking third and fourth with Imperial Cavalier and Apache Sauce while Nicola Wilson was fifth and Clea Phillipps sixth.

Oakham's Piggy French was forced to retire on What A Performance during the treacherous cross-country cross while fellow Rutland rider Richard Jones suffered a double withdrawal.

He withdrew Valentina II before the cross-country stage and also bowed out with Fox On The Run before the dressage.
