Oakham United’s 11 game winning run came to an end on Tuesday night when they lost 2-1 to higher league Bardon Hill Sports in quarter-finals of the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup but not without a stunning effort from the PDFL Premier Division leaders which left their hosts hanging on.

Oakham United assistant manager Andrew Bailey said: “We showed what we are capable of.

“In the second half I was proud to be stood on the side line with the Oakham United badge on my chest because a neutral watching would not have known who was the step six side. We are disappointed because we deserved to get something out of the game.”

Oakham went 2-0 down to the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division side after wasting a golden opportunity to take the lead in the first half. Eddie McDonal poked an effort wide after being put into a brilliant position by Robbie Dance and just before the break Bardon Hill made them pay for it, scoring a well-worked goal to take the lead.

After the break the game was all Oakham but Sports reminded the visitors of their class with a screamer from 25 yards which made any hope of a comeback unlikely.

However with five minutes to go McDonald picked the ball up in midfield and played in Ben Easson with a killer lofted pass. Easson put the initial shot through the keeper’s legs and then followed it up to make sure. But time ran out as Oakham chased for an equaliser.
