Bels still battling to avoid relegation

Stamford Bels 4 Sawtry 1

STAMFORD Bels picked up their first victory since August with a 4-1 home win against Sawtry on Saturday.

Sean O’ Donnell scored twice and Aaron Sismey and Sean Edwards were also both on target to pick up vital points in Bels’ battle to avoid a second consecutive relegation.

Manager Martin Conneely said: “We have not been playing too badly but you dig yourself into a rut. The lads just seemed up for it on Saturday but I didn’t feel it was safe until about the 88th minute.”

Bels were 4-0 up at half-time and adapted better to the windy conditions.

O’Donnell scored with headers in the 15th and 25 minutes. Sismey made it three with a diving header on 35 minutes and Edwards extended Bels’ advantage just before halftime.

“Unfortunately we don’t have a game this week, added the Bels boss. Their next game is at home to Hampton Sports on February 4.

Stamford Bels: Ash Sylvester, Mark Knighton, Richard Taylor, Shaun Heath, Mike Cantwell, Sean O’Donnell, Sean Edwards, Paul Cramp, Nick Clipston, Nathan Wilson, Aaron Sismore. Subs: Sean Glover, Alex Don, Rhys Forbes.
