Bennett will lead Town

UPPINGHAM Town boss Richard Kendrick has named Martin Bennett as his skipper for the forthcoming season.

Bennett stood in as captain last season in the absence of Paul Sheehan but although Kendrick expects Sheehan to return from injury in October the Town boss said Bennett would retain the captain’s armband.

“Martin will be skipper of Uppingham Town next season. He stepped in last year and did well,” said Kendrick, who began his squad’s pre-season training on Monday evening at Tod’s Piece.

“We had a good turnout for the first session and picked up a few new youngsters.

“We are looking forward to getting Paul back. That will be a big plus for us; he is such an important player.”

Aiming to boost his squad numbers he added: “We are looking for players to join the existing squad and also anybody interested in getting involved with the management team. Everybody is welcome.”
