Bourne gave a good account of themselves against high-flying Northampton Spencer before losing by the odd goal in five.

Paul Pickering fired the hosts 2-0 ahead inside the opening 18 minutes, including a 25-yard stunner, as Bourne were slow to settle into their stride.

Scott Spearink pulled one back seven minutes after the break but Bourne, who had beaten Spencer when the sides met three weeks earlier, eased off and were punished when Matt Long netted his tenth of the season to make it 3-1.

Sam Wilson gave the Wakes hope when netting 12 minutes from time to set up an exciting finish but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Henry Dunn, Dan Wilson and Andrew Moss impressed for Bourne, who are still well placed for a mid-table finish.

Bourne boss Rafa Mazzarella said: “They had a few lads missing when we beat them the other week so we knew this would be a tough game.

“We were two goals down before we started playing and it was end-to-end once we got it back to 3-2 but they are right up there and can go top if they win their games in hand so it is no disgrace losing to them.”
