Bourne bounce back with cup victory

Bourne Ladies FC returned to winning ways by beating a strong Whittlesey side 4-1 in a rearranged S-Tech League Cup game on Sunday.

After an enforced two week break due to bad weather, the home side soon found their rhythm and forced the Whittlesey keeper into a number of fine saves.

Bourne took the lead when a Sammy Hawkins corner was met by Kim Fairweather on the volley to score her first goal of the season from close range.

Bourne Ladies should have increased their lead before half time but the score remained 1-0 at half time.

Whittlesey were back in the game five minutes into the second half when a blocked clearance fell kindly to the visitors’ striker who scored from an acute angle.

Bourne regained the lead 10 minutes later when leading scorer Claire Lawrenson scored the first of her two goals, breaking at pace down the right and unleashing a fierce shot which the Whittelsey goal keeper got her hands to but could not stop going over the line.

The Whittelsey keeper had a fine afternoon, stopping a goalbound shot low to her left from a 20 yard effort from Sophie Fisher but moments later, the same player, in almost an identical spot, scored a fine goal, this time giving the keeper no chance.

Lawrenson completed the scoring when she was put clean through by a defence-splitting pass from Sophie Fisher, clipping the ball over the advancing keeper.

Bourne Ladies’ player of the match was Sarah Quint, who continues to impress at right back and gave an outstanding display.

Bourne Ladies: Emma Ketteringham, Sarah Quint , Jack Jagger, Sammy Hawkins, Becky Cope, Hannah Aaron, Kim Fairweather, Benita Webster, Sophie Fisher, Jemma Smith, Claire Lawrenson, Becca Burton, Rosie Baker, Ellen Simmons.
