Cottesmore fight back for cup win

Leicestershire Beacon Bitter Cup

Ratby Sports 1 Cottesmore 2

A MAKESHIFT Cottesmore side beat Ratby Sports away in the first round of the Leicestershire League’s Beacon Bitter Cup on Monday.

Cottesmore fell behind to a swift counter attack that began after Ben Kind had struck the upright for the Rutland side. Ratby cleared the ball from their area, punted it downfield and took the lead.

“We should have been one up but instead were one down within 10 seconds,” said Cottesmore’s John Morton, who was on hand to level the score shortly before half time. Kind’s shot was parried and fell neatly to Morton who thumped home on the half volley.

Morton added: “We were probably the better side in the first half; their keeper made a couple of very good saves.

“After the break we switched from 3-4-3 to 4-4-2 and totally dominated the second half. It could have been five or six.”

But it took Cottesmore until the 70th minute to take the lead, when Tommy Cardell moved forward from the halfway line, ran at the full back and drilled a low shot into the far corner.

Cardell was one of a number of players on loan from Bourne including the player-manager and Market Overton cricketer Darren Munton.

“If you give him half a yard, he will create chances. He hit a fantastic half volley in the first half. He played up front with Ben Easson and Lee Wood in midfield was inspirational.”

Cottesmore: R Stainsby, C Rook, D Smith, T Cardell, R Giblin, B Kind, J Morton, L Wood, R Lewin, D Munton, B Easson.
