Cottesmore run crashes to a halt

Cottesmore Amateurs’ year got off to the worst possible start with their heaviest defeat of the season - crashing to a 7-0 loss at Stapenhill.

The Rogues Park side went into the Leicestershire Senior League match looking to extend a run of five matches unbeaten in the league but after going in two down at half-time things went from bad to worse in the second half.

Stapenhill scored a third on the break, a fourth from the penalty spot and from that point there was no return.

Cottesmore joint manager Steve Duffy said: “At half time the game as still there for us but then we threw in the towel.

“Our discipline and desire went and that has never happened before.

“I hope it was just a blip. They deserved to win but not by the scoreline.”

Matt Weighman with a hat-trick, Sam Taylor with a brace and Asa Sippets and Ben Kelly-Wally were the Stapenhill marksmen.

Amateurs hope to have several players Jordan King, Jamie McKay and Ian Harrison back for this weekend’s match at home to second-placed Caterpillar.

Caterpillar beat Cottesmore 3-1 early in the season when Ben Kind scored for the Rutland side but until they crashed to earth at Stapenhill, Amateurs had shown continued improvement and Duffy certainly fancies his side’s chances.

“We have beaten the top of the league before,” said the Cottesmore boss.

“You don’t become a bad side overnight. We had been playing well and we have to bounce back and show the character that we have but failed to show last week.”

Kick off at Rogues Park on Saturday is a at 3pm.

Cottesmore: Rob Lewin, Callum Pawley, Andy Teare, Chris Shaw, Richard Giblin (Andre Fontura), Dave Gordon, Fred Stannard (Matt Panter), Ben Kind, Rob Mason, Alex Brown, Harry Stannard (Will Wells).
