Daniels are too hot for Mickleover

The Daniels proved far too hot for Mickleover Sports to handle on Saturday, cruising to a comfortable 5-2 victory at Kettering Road.
Stamford followed their 4-0 mid-week demolition of Rainworth with a routine win that could have been by a greater scoreline had they not eased off in the final 30 minutes.
It was all over well before the visitors’ restored some pride with their second strike of the afternoon, scored by Martin Smyth in the 77th minute.
For the first hour Stamford had dominated with however it was Sports who opened the scoring, taking the lead when Eric Graves rounded off a goalmouth scramble from inside the box.
But that goal triggered the perfect response from Stamford, who had lost centre back Tom Batchelor to a head injury just moments earlier.
Danny Brooks played in man-of-the match James Ozmen from the restart and the midfielder confidently tucked away his first goal for the club from just inside the penalty area.
Stamford were ahead just a minute later after Gary King, who had an excellent game all afternoon, drove the ball home from a similar position to Ozmen, on the left-hand edge of the Mickleover box.
Within five minutes King had doubled Stamford’s lead, timing his run into the box perfectly to meet Ricky Miller’s low cross.
Miller made it fours early in the second half, chesting down Jake Gibson’s crossfield ball and firing the ball low to Tom Gutteridge’s left from outside the box.
Louis Hamilton made it five with a deflected shot that looped up into the top left corner in the 58th minute.
Until that point Matt Finlay in the Daniels’ goal had enjoyed a largely untroubled day but as Stamford stepped down a gear, he forced to tip over two long range efforts before the visitors found their way past him.
The win strengthens the Daniels third-place and, coupled with Belper’s 3-1 victory at King’s Lynn, moves Stamford to within one point of the second-placed side with a game in hand.
Sutton Coldfield dropped to fifth, with Gresley replacing them in fourth and both sides six points adrift of Stamford. Coalville remain eight points ahead of Stamford at the top of the Evo-Stik League First Division South.
Stamford are away at King’ Lynn tomorrow evening for the first round of the Doodson Cup. Their next league game is at home to Belper on Saturday (kick off 3pm).
