Stamford AFC finished their successful pre-season programme with a 3-1 victory at home to Coalville on Saturday.
Goals from Jon Challinor, Richard Jones and Jordan Smith saw the Daniels through to a win against the side who play one division below them in the Evo-Stik First Division South.
Challinor opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a strike from distance. Skipper Richard Jones added a second just before the break with a towering header from a Matt Cotton cross. The visitors pulled a goal back in the 65th minutes when Ant Carney flicked a headed effort into the Daniels net.
Stamford’s nerves were then tested when Daniels’ keeper Richard Knight was called into action to save a penalty in the 80th minute.
Knight made amends for conceding the penalty when he brought down Pelle Orton by saving Grant Ryan’s effort.
With a minute of regular time left to play Smith got on the scoresheet once again, having scored a hat-trick last week, this time directing a bullet header into the goal after a great run and cross from Ryan Clarke.
The Daniels have shown some decent form during pre-season and have won five of their seven fixtures, including a big 7-0 win over local rivals Blackstones and 8-2 victory at Bourne Town to lift the Wilf Notley Cup.
Stamford start their Evo-Stik Northern Premier league season at home to Workington on Saturday. Kick off 3pm.
