Deeping Rangers slipped from the top of the ChromaSport and Trophies United Counties League after drawing 0-0 with Cogenhoe United.

Spalding moved ahead with a 4-0 win over Stewarts and Lloyds Corby. They also have two games in hand of Rangers.

Deeping’s away match to Cogenhoe wasn’t helped by the windy conditions and heavy pitch.

Rangers had another reshuffle that saw Ciaran Holt start for the first League game since the first week of the season and skipper David Burton-Jones filling the gap created by Stacey Cartwright’s absence through illness.

Deeping started with the wind at their backs and it quickly became clear that this would not be a game for the connoisseur.

The Cooks showed how to play against the wind as Thomason released Lamb-Johnson down the right but his effort was neither a shot or cross and evaded his team-mates.

A Cogenhoe defensive clearance fell to Matt Heron whose good touch set up Alex Beck but he took too long to get the controlled and his eventual shot was straight at Finlay in the home goal.

Rangers’ Josh Moreman hit a 30-yard free kick that had Finlay scrambling and his parry fell in the path of Heron whose shot was saved.

Mitch Griffiths also had a shot, but was wide of the target.

Deeping were now having most of the ball although attempts in the home box were being limited by a stubborn home defence.

The home side were having little time in the Deeping half but a good chance came as Thomason played in Herbert but Spencer Tinkler was on hand to eliminate the danger with a good clearing tackle.

Several changes were made at half-time as Holt was replaced by Ondre Odain for Deeping.

Rangers started brightly taking the game to The Cooks but the pattern soon became the same as the first with the home side benefiting from the wind at their backs.

Rangers showed some determination to get on the score sheet with Tinkler stopping a Cogenhoe attack to release Craig Parker. He found Griffiths who progressed into the home half to play in Beck but he was fouled before he could shoot.

From the free-kick Moreman tested Finlay but he held onto the ball.

A Doughty goal-kick blew back into the edge of the Rangers box with desperate defending seeing the ball falling to Thomason again who shot over again.

Both sides continued to have chances but even with six minutes of injury time a goal was not found and the spectators were left thinking of what might have been without the blustery conditions.
