Deeping Rangers Rangers 5 New Mills 1
DEEPING Rangers made history on Saturday by reaching the draw for the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.
Rangers cruised past Stockport side New Mills, thrashing their higher league opposition 5-1 with goals from Tony Battersby, Kev Gilbert, Mark Jones and a brace from Josh Moreman.
Just as a week after, when they put six past Kempston in a league fixture, Rangers came out of the traps quickly and were ahead within four minutes through a Mark Jones header. Moreman supplied the looping cross.
After the lively start, things began to settle into an even contest with New Mills coming close to levelling with a shot cleared off the line. But as the half wore on, Rangers came became stronger and played some delightful football.
Man of the match Matt Heron, Gilbert and Moreman all went close early in the second half but they had to wait until the 68th minute for a deserved second goal - a penalty that New Mills felt was harshly awarded. Moreman was closing in on goalkeeper Proctor, who dived at the feet of the attacker. Both his hands were clearly made contact with the ball before Moreman tumbled across him, but referee Graham Kinnear, stunned the crowd by awarding a penalty.
Once the ensuing hue and cry had died down, Tony Battersby stepped up to convert the spot kick for a two goal lead.
To a large extent the penalty seemed to knock the stuffing out of the visitors allowing Josh Moreman to add two more goals in the 75th and 79th minutes.
During a rare raid forward New Mills did get themselves on the scoresheet, but only by way of an own goal scored in spectacular fashion by the otherwise splendid Spencer Tinkler.
And as the afternoon shadows began to lengthen, there was still time for Gilbert to add a fifth for Rangers after some skillful work from Josh Moreman on the edge of the box.
A resounding win for Rangers and the prospect another FA Cup match to come.
