Bourne Ladies 2 - 1 Downham Ladies
BOURNE Ladies FC maintained their impressive start to the S-TEC League season with a hard fought victory against Downham at the Abbey Lawn on Sunday to make it two wins out of three.
The visitors took an early lead when they beat the offside trap to score and, but for a fine save from Bourne’s goalkeeper Emma Ketteringham, Downham could have doubled their lead just minutes later.
Bourne Ladies settled into their stride midway through the first half with some neat passing moves despite worsening weather conditions and substitute Claire Lawrenson latched on to a through ball and showed great strength to hold off the Downham defenders to crash the ball home and bring the scores level.
Minutes later the Bourne striker was put clear again with a great pass from Sarah Quint, and Lawrenson again gave the Downham keeper no chance.
At this stage Bourne played some great football with player-of-the-match Kim Fairweather at the centre of it. Bourne should have added further to the score line before half time but were denied by a series of fine saves from the Downham Keeper.
The second half followed much the same pattern with Bourne pressing hard to extend their lead while a determined Downham side remained dangerous on the break.
Both teams created a number of chances and Bourne had Ketteringham to thank for a fine save in the final minutes to ensure that all three points went to the home side.
With four players making impressive home debuts for Bourne Ladies, including Lisa Richardson, Hannah Aaron, Fairweather in the heart of midfield, and Bec Drewry shoring up the defence the home side thoroughly deserved their victory
