Cottesmore 1 - 4 Desford

COTTESMORE Amateurs failed to build on Saturday's superb 6-0 cup win this afternoon, losing 4-1 at home to Desford in the Leciestershire Senior League.

Amateurs got off to the worst possible start at Rogues Park, conceding the opening goal in the first 30 seconds of the match but they battled back well with Seb Archer-Fern beating his marker for pace to level on 15 minutes.

But the game grew increasingly niggly and the Cottesmore bench were livid when Desford played on despite Ollie McCann laying injured in the centre circle. The referee waved play on and a striker's tackle from Archer-Fern led to a spot kick which was neatly slotted past Danny Bomken.

McCann, who had suffered an arm injury, played no further part in the game and Cottesmore were forced to make a second first half substitution when Andre Fontoura limped off injured.

Amid a smattering of yellow cards, Archer-Fern was brought down in full flight with the last man beaten - however the referee showed only a yellow and Cottesmore were unable to take advanatge of the free kick.

Cottesmore's best chances as the first half drew to a close fell to substitute Dave Gordon, who headed narrowly wide, and Mark Cowling whose ambitious bicycle kick flew over the bar.

Amateurs had a strong shout for a penalty when the ball appeared to strike a Desford player's hand in the box, but they came closest to reducing the deficit when a close range effort was deflected over amid a goalmouth scramble.

Desford scored twice in the second half as the Rutlanders increasingly lost their shape. The first was the result of a swift counter with Bomken, who was blameless for all four goals conceded, rounded by the Desford striker who stroked the ball home into an empty net.

The fourth, late in the game, had been cleared off the line once but Andy Teare was caught hesitating and Desford scored the fourth for a scoreline that was harsh on Cottesmore.

Cottesmore joint boss Steve Duffy was disappointed by his side's display.

He said: "As well as we played on Saturday, we were poor today.

"When you go a goal down straight from the kick off, it sets you back but today we had too many individuals.

"We had to change shape when McCann went off injured but we were just not good enough."

Cottesmore: Bomken, Spawton, McCann, Panter, Teare, Shepherd, Fontoura, Mason, Cowling, Archer-Fern, McKay. Subs used: Gordon, Smith, Harrison.

Elsewhere in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division today, Stapenhill were beaten 1-0 by Caterpillar.

Cottesmore face Caterpillar away on Saturday.
