TEAM of the month, Oakham United, moved up to third in the Peterborough & District League on Saturday on the back of a 3-1 win at Riverside Rovers.
Earlier in the day, United were named team of the month for August by league sponsors ChromaSports and Trophies; an award that both delighted and surprised joint manager Pat Johnson.
“It’s quite out of the blue,” said Johnson. “We have had a good start but Moulton Harrox and Netherton are both above us, so it wasn’t expected.
“Last year we were near the bottom, so whether that was a factor I’m not sure. But if they’re looking at teams that have improved, Uppingham had a good start too so it was probably going to be us or Uppingham.”
Oakham have won five from eight of their opening games with just one defeat this season but Johnson warned that mid-table was the aim at the start of a season and that doesn’t change this early into the campaign.
“We are more than happy so far but this should not raise expectations,” he cautioned. “We have played a lot of our games at home.”
James Twose gave Oakham a first half lead on Saturday, scoring 10 minutes before half time, latching onto a ball over the top and beating the keeper.
Oakham doubled their lead a quarter of an hour into the second half with Eddie McDonald heading in Stu Lambie’s corner but within seconds Oakham conceded through a swift Riverside move straight from the kick off, which Cardin Pierre-Liverpool converted.
For ten minutes Oakham were under pressure but their nerves held and Natham Arkle lobbed the Riverside keeper to restore United’s two goal advantage.
Oakham are at home to Stilton United in the PFA Senior Cup on Saturday. Kick off is at 2pm.
Oakham: Shane Hicks, Sam Munton (Craig Welbourne), Tom Bain, Jamie Forbes, Ben Cox, Stu Lambie, Eddie McDonald, Robbie Dance (Liam Hollingworth), Ben Dickinson, Nathan Arkle, James Twose.
