Fenland League Cup semi-final
Bourne Ladies 2
Wisbech St Mary 1
BOURNE Ladies have reached their first ever cup final by beating Wisbech St Mary in the semi-final of the Fenland Ladies Cup at Recreation Road on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors, having just won the league unbeaten, made a strong start and could consider themselves a touch unfortunate not to take the lead in the early exchanges as a speculative effort from outside the box came back off the post.
But Bourne cleared their lines and were unlucky themselves not to take the lead when the impressive Sarah Quint failed to connect at the far post.
The scores remained even at the break but Wisbech broke the deadlock early in the second half. Their winger broke down the left flank and crossed perfectly for an on-rushing forward to score low into the net.
This seemed to spur on Bourne Ladies to step up a gear and they were level just ten minutes later when Sophie Fisher picked the ball up just inside the penalty area and drilled a fierce shot into the roof of the net.
Bourne should have extended their lead after being awarded a penalty for a trip on Benita Webster with only 10 minutes remaining. But Bourne’s leading goalscorer Lotti Christie stepped up and crashed the spot kick against the bar.
With the clock running down, both teams went in search of the winner and with only minutes remaining, Becca Burton delivered a perfect free kick from just inside the visitors’ half, which was met perfectly by Hannah Goold to head into the corner of the net.
It was no less than Hannah deserved after an impressive performance all afternoon.
With four minutes of injury time, the league winners threw everything at the home side but Bourne Ladies remained resolute and deserved their hard fought victory.
The final, due to be played yesterday evening was postponed, and the club is awaiting confirmation of the new date.
Bourne Ladies will resume training at Recreation Road on July 5 (6.30pm until 7.30pm). For details call Tina Crawley on 07971 555710.
