Lincolnshire FA Senior Cup first round - Spalding United 0 Stamford 2
A goal at the end of each half made all the difference on Friday night in the opening tie of the new-look Lincolnshire FA Senior Cup.
The first home game of Spalding United’s new era saw them knocked out as Stamford booked a quarter-final against Gainsborough Trinity on Tuesday.
Jordan Smith put the Daniels ahead and substitute Ryan Robbins wrapped up victory with a last-minute penalty.
In a more competitive first half Smith was denied by Tulips keeper Michael Duggan, James Jepson fired wide and Eddy Samba’s drive was deflected over.
Adam Millson managed Spalding’s only attempt on target before the break but Mitch Griffiths should have done better with a free header.
Smith broke the deadlock with a close-range finish which squirmed past Duggan to put Stamford in control.
They rarely looked likely to squander the advantage, although Michael Frew’s header bounced wide and Paul Walker also failed to convert a far-post opportunity.
Dan Clements, Cameron Powell and Jordan Neil had chances to extend the lead but Robbins scored from the spot following Neal Spafford’s foul on Smith.
