Deeping Rangers go into tomorrow’s FA Vase clash at Outgang Road having taken four points from two of the top three sides this week.
Fourth-placed Rangers are in the middle of a testing run of games but have more than matched United Counties League leaders St Ives and third-placed Spalding United.
Following on the back of an impressive point gained at St Ives on Saturday, Rangers beat high-flying, local rivals Spalding United 2-0 at Outgang Road on Tuesday evening.
Rangers began to win the midfield battle with Dave Burton-Jones twice, and Harry Deane going close to getting on the scoresheet and with half-time approaching, Deane lofted a corner over the penalty spot which Chris Logan, always a danger at set pieces, powerfully headed home.
On the hour mark Alex Beck was unlucky to see his swerving, long range effort strike the woodwork and from that point the visitors were under the cosh.
Rangers secured the three points five minutes from time when Burton-Jones put Deane through to slip the ball past the oncoming keeper.
Saturday’s tie at St Ives was a great game with the league leaders regrouping after the sale of Connor Washington to Conference side Newport County.
James Doughty was in terrific form, saving Rangers several times during the first half but St Ives took the lead shortly after half time. Ricky Miller latched onto the ball outside the box, powered past the Rangers defence and fired past Doughty.
At this point it seemed as if the home side would go on to take all the points, but the goal seemed to spur Rangers’ into greater efforts and when Burton-Jones rose to power a header in to level the scores from a Kev Brader corner, the play swung in favour of the visitors. In the closing stages Rangers created numerous half chances, with a stunning save from Conroy from Heron.
