Deeping Rangers 2 Spalding Utd 1

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

DEEPING Rangers will face Belper Town at home in the next round of the FA Cup after putting out local rivals Spalding United on Saturday.

But Deeping left it late to snatch victory from defeat with substitute Ryan Oliver coming off the bench to score in the 88th and 89th minutes and hand Tuncay Korkmaz a 2-1 win over one of his former clubs.

Deeping made the early running but without the fluency of their victory against Thrapston a week earlier. Josh Moreman should have done better when through on goal, electing to attempt a cross instead of shooting and soon after Spalding were ahead.

Glen Fuff headed past James Doughty from a corner to give the Tulips a 15th minute lead.

Mark Jones and Matt Heron came close to scoring with Luke McShane pulling off a superb fingertip save to deny Jones. Meanwhile Dave Burton Jones was lucky to remain cardless after a heavy tackle on Jammal Shahin, Spalding’s ex-Grimsby Town player.

The second half began as the first had ended, with Deeping applying all the pressure, and Jones, Moreman and Tony Battersby all coming close but Moreman’s day was to end early. Ten minutes after the break, Moreman stretchered off with a splint covering his leg

The home side continued to push forward and on 79 minutes Oliver came on for Battersby and the switch proved inspired.

Deeping keeper Doughty made the save of the game, diving full length to palm away a goalbound shot and keep his side in contention. And they rewarded his efforts with two late strikes.

After sustained Deeping pressure, the ball finally reached Oliver who calmly slotted home and then Luke McShane, the normally reliable Spalding keeper, charged out of his area and allowed Oliver to hit a low drive for his second goal.

Rangers boss, Tuncay Korkmaz, said: “We had quite a bit of possession but didn’t create enough chances until the last 10 minutes.

“It was important for us to win this game and it helps the bank account of the club. We’re not going to win the FA Cup but we want to keep going as far as we can and get some momentum.”

Just 13 rounds to Wembley and Belper visit Outgang Road on September 3.
