Stamford AFC have will have a tough job of defending their Lincolnshire Senior Trophy title, a competition they have won for the last two years, as they have to start their defence away at Spalding United tonight (7.45pm ko)

The Lincolnshire FA have changed the competition to included all teams in the county meaning higher standard sides will come into the competition in later rounds.

If Stamford win tonight they will play Gainsborough on Tuesday.

Stamford manager David Staff: “Spalding are a good side, they have taken a couple of our guys and they will probably be pushing for promotion this year, they play at a standard similar to ourselves.

“It will certainly be a step up from Blackstones.”

Staff said he was pleased with the run out against their local rivals and credited Blackstones for making it a more competitive match than the 7-0 scoreline suggests.

He said despite it being a cup game the Daniels will use the fixture as a pre-season game. Staff said: “You have to, we have only done five sessions together and you have got guys who have only played 45 minutes.

“We have got bigger priorities on the horizon, we want to win in the league.

“We certainly don’t want to be getting injuries or suspensions.”

One of the players making a first appearance for the club was central midfielder Eddy Samba who did well in a holding position while on trial.
