Stamford Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals of the PFA Senior Cup with an impressive 2-0 win over PDFL Premier Division side Holbeach United Reserves.

There was a cagey start to the game as both sides set up not to concede an early goal.

Holbeach dominated the early possession with some good slick passing but Stamford looked dangerous on the counter attack.

Lions goalkeeper Jimmy Russon pulled out a top save to palm away a long range shot heading for the top corner to keep the game scoreless.

At the other end Danny Sheehan powered a header past the keeper but saw it crash off the cross bar.

The second half saw the game open up as both sides grew more ambitious and set out to win the encounter.

Ryan Brown flashed a shot just wide after a one two with Jake Walton in a hint of what was to come.

The defensive partnership of Sam Bush and Sean Kelly was tested by a strong physical attacking line from higher league Holbeach but both stood firm to the test as time and again they snuffed out the danger.

Jack Travers grew into the game and soon started causing problems for the visitors down the left, with the pace in the Lions attack of Travers, Brown and Tom Edwards there was always a threat going forward.

With eleven minutes to go that threat proved its worth when good link up play from Brown and Edwards opened up the defence and Travers was played in before he steadied himself and rifled the ball past the keeper to break the deadlock. Holbeach responded by going all out attack. Joe Lippett lunged into a last ditch tackle to prevent a goal-scoring opportunity before Russon again foiled a goal with a strong hand away.

Lions were under siege as the corners mounted up but they stood strong and in the last minute new signing Ondrej Sobeslav broke from midfield, shrugged off his marker and lifted the ball over the out-rushing keeper to seal a 2-0 win for the Stamford side.

Lions, who currently sit top of the PDFL Division One, have the weekend off before welcoming Long Sutton Athletic to Borderville.
