Stones pay for wayward finishing

Blackstones were made to pay for wayward finishing by a clinical Newport Pagnell side who scored three late goals to win 3-0 in Saturday.

The Stamford side could have been well ahead before Dominic Lawless put the visitors ahead in the 71st minute - instead they were left with nothing from a disappointing defeat at Lincoln Road.

Lawless doubled Pagnell’s lead after carelessness in Stones’ defence ten minutes later, and Steve Brooks broke from a Blackstones corner to rub salt in the wounds late on, taking the ball the length of the pitch before sliding the ball past Lee Crockett.

Pagnell, who were half an hour late due to a puncture on their way to the ground, had survived a couple scares with Josh McAdoo saving well from a Sam Bettinson header in the first half and tipping a fine curling effort from Daniels’ loanee Jack McGovern onto the woodwork in the second.

Luke Avis should have forced the keeper into a save when the game was still goalless in the second period, but the Stones midfielder drilled his shot the wrong side of the left hand upright.

Once Pagnell went ahead they looked the stronger side and Richard Armstrong thumped a super strike against Stones cross bar as the game opened up late on.

But by that time Blackstones’ front pair of Addie Staffieri and Sam Bettinson looked jaded.

Blackstones now have three away games on the trot in the United Counties League Premier Division, beginning with a trip Sleaford Town tomorrow evening. They then face S&L Corby away on Saturday afternoon and third-placed St Ives Town on December 15. Their next game at Lincoln Road is not until the visit of Spalding United on December 19.

Blackstones: Lee Crockett, Tim Quy, Ben Porter, Luke Avis (Danny Barker), Luke Hunnings, Tom Davies (James Curran), Robbie Pearce (Jason Kilbride), Jack McGovern, Sam Bettinson, Addie Staffieri, Joe Hopewell. Sub unused: Herold Doncerelle.

Blackstones Reserves’ match at Thrapston was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch on Saturday.

Their next match is at home to Desborough Reserves on Saturday.
