Superb win will boost confidence

Bourne Town Reserves ended the year on a high with a magnificent 7-1 victory away against Olney Town’s reserves on Saturday.

Scott Spearink scored four and Danny Pick a brace with Ashley Firth also on the scoresheet as the Wakes reserves picked up their first league win of the season.

It was the only fixture in the Reserves Second Division to be played on an afternoon when many United Counties League games were cancelled due to waterlogged pitches.

The side’s only other victories this season have been in cup matches but manager Scott McKenzie, who took over in November, reckons this result had been on the cards for some time.

He said: “It has taken us a while. From a football point of view it has been coming. We have taken top-of-the-table teams close and played well but got nothing from games.”

Goalkeeper Matt Gilson pulled off several vital early saves before Bourne were caught sleeping in defence and went behind to Craig Gorrie’s goal.

But from that point the Wakes never looked like a team struggling at the wrong end of the table.

McKenzie said: “Scott hit an absolute screamer into the top corner and after that they did not threaten us much.”

Spearink and Pick then put Bourne 3-1 ahead before the break. Spearink completed his hat-trick after the break and added his fourth while Pick and Firth took the game beyond their hosts.

McKenzie added: “It’s a very good morale booster and hopefully will bring us more confidence. We had been struggling to score goals but on Saturday we played some good football with some well-taken goals. We passed the ball around superbly and created lots of opportunities.

“Luke Enderwick was very unselfish when one-on-one with the keeper to square the ball to Scott for a simple tap-in - that was the best goal in terms of the build-up but Scott’s first was a very special strike.”

Bourne’s Reserves are at home to Yaxley tomorrow, while the first team, whose match at Rushden and Higham was postponed last weekend, travel to play Thrapston tomorrow. Thrapston then visit the Abbey Lawn for the reverse fixture on Tuesday evening.

Bourne Reserves: Matt Gilson, Dan Bratcher, Guy Woods, Mark Walklin, Josh Bell, Dan Mason, Ross Bell (Ben Thomson), Scott Spearink, Scott McKenzie (Luke Enderwick), Danny Pick, Ashley Firth.
