A teenager who has been turning out for Uppingham Town for the last two years is trading the Rutland side for a Maltese Premier League club.

Callum O’Berg, 18, is set to join up with Naxxar Lions this weekend.

Midfielder Callum has signed a three year contract with the Naxxar Lions after taking part in a trial with the club last year.

Uppingham manager Richard Kendrick said: “It is great news for him but we are disappointed to lose him.

“He is very talented and if he puts his head down and works hard he could do well.

“I and everyone at the club wish him the best of luck. Our loss is their gain.”

Callum is following in the steps of his father Paul who also played for the Naxxar Lions as well as Scunthorpe, Wimbledon, Stockport County and Chester City.

Now Kendrick and Uppingham are getting used to life without their regular set-piece taker.

Uppingham Town were back in action on Saturday at high-flying Whittlesey United.

But Town were soundly beaten 4-1 by the home side, ending their run in the PFA Senior Cup.

Kendrick said: “I think our game suffered for the lay-off. We started all right but we just looked like we weren’t polished enough.

“It was like a pre-season game by the way we started to play. We just couldn’t get things going.

“We were completely with them in the game but unfortunately we paid the price for our mistakes.

“We made three mistakes in the first half and they scored from all of them but when you looked back it didn’t feel like a 3-0 half.

“The one bonus for us is it was in the cup. Of course I am disappointed to be out of the cup but at least it will not make our fixture build-up any worse.”

Dave Laughton scored a consolation goal for Town.

Kendrick said he hopes his side’s rustiness is out of their system for the visit of Peterborough ICA in the league tomorrow, k0 2pm.
