RUTLAND Veterans FC have reached the semi-final of the Umbro Veterans National Championship.
After a mixed season, Rutland Vets qualified for the last four with a resounding 4-2 victory over Spurley Hey of Stockport.
Played on a small pitch in Stockport, the Veterans were quickly into their stride with Mark Bryan, Steve Duffy and Richard Wilson dominating the midfield.
A fine 25 yard strike by Bryan saw Rutland take the lead.
Darren Munton increased the lead and two further goals from Brian Cooper put the Veterans into an unassailable lead.
Only in the last five minutes did Spurley hit back when tired legs took their toll of Rutland.
Their semi-final opponents have yet to complete their quarter final and Rutland’s next home game will be on Sunday in the inaugural over 50’s game against Kirby Muxloe at Cottesmore.
The Vets thanked Richard and Cathy at the Odd House for their post-match refreshments.
