FORMER Cottesmore skipper Lee Wood has moved five miles down the road to Oakham United to take charge of the reserve side.
As a player, Wood has represented Rotherham United, Scarborough Town, Bourne Town, Blackstones and Holwell but now the 39-year-old feels it’s time to take the plunge into management.
Wood said: “Having played at a club for many years it is not always an easy decision to move on but when the day comes to retire as a player I see this move as a wonderful opportunity to give something back to football in the community.
“There are exciting times ahead at Oakham and an invitation to be part of this is an honour. I hope my contribution will go some way in helping the club develop young players and begin the climb up the ladder.”
Jamie Saddington will assist Wood in running and developing the reserve squad and Wood added: “We have an enthusiastic group of players who are training hard and a comprehensive list of local friendly matches in the pipeline which will afford Muzzy (Saddington) and I the chance to formulate plans and make preparations for the coming season.”
Chairman Alistair Forbes believes recruiting Wood is a great addition to the club which recently received permission to set up a ground at the new Rutland County College site.
Forbes said: “It is fantastic that a local player who has achieved what Lee has achieved in the game both professionally and locally shares our vision.
“His ability on the pitch is there for everyone to see, his knowledge of the game is fantastic and he leads by example. I am positive Lee along with Andy, Pat, Dave, Tony and Michael can take our club to the next level.”
