Frozen greens test leading players

WEEK 11 of the winter order of merit brought a bit of a shock to the regular players at Greetham Valley.
Gone was the recent pleasant playing conditions and in its place came frozen greens. However, this was not reflected in the scoring of the more experienced players with the top six on were covered by just two points.
Wayne Terrett had his second win of the series, coming in with a score of 38 points. Steve Anderson also scored 38 points but just lost out on countback and took second place.
The fight for third was between four players: Terry Smith, Graham Smith, Steff Dutton and Shaun Denholm who all scored 37 points. After countback, Terry took third place courtesy of a great score of 21 points on the back nine.
The top six played extremely steady golf and did well to be under par on frozen greens.
The top three in the overall order of merit didn’t fare too well in the conditions but still retained their positions.
Bob Beverley is still in first place 20 points ahead of Neil Harris. Dave Copley retains third spot but Steff Dutton is closing in on them all thanks to his 37 points and joint fourth place this week.
l THE delayed round six of the seniors winter league took place on Monday and was played on winter greens which were frozen solid, making the early rounds very difficult.
They did however thaw out quite quickly and players who teed off a little later benefited from slightly softer greens.
The competition format is Stableford with a 7/8 handicap allowance and 19 handicapper Radley Wardhaugh and Ray Reynolds, who plays off 20, both came in with 43 points.
Radley took the win on countback thanks to a better back nine score. Twenty handicapper Bill Ormond was third with 41 points.
The league consists of ten games played from October to the end of March with players counting their best five scores.
Nine handicapper Neil Lowndes currently leads the field with 179 points. Twelve handicapper Malcolm Barnes is only two points behind in second with 177 points. Twenty handicapper Charles Guttridge is only one point further behind in third with 176 points making it too close to call. Further frosty days could provide some fascinating results.
Stoke Rochford
SIXTY-one Stoke Seniors turned out in spring-like conditions for last week’s Texas Scramble competition.
Winners with 62 (net 54.8) were Roger Smith, Barry Coop, Tony Walker and John Smeeton; Second on 65 (net 58.7) were Mick Rance, Alan Hayward, Roland Slack and John Wright, and third on 65 (net 58.8) were Chris Woof, Joe Kime, John Helstrip and David Hamilton.
After ten rounds the overall leader is Jarvis Peden with 25 points, Tony Walker has 23, Les Cooper and Mike Palmer each have 22.
