Hardcore brave atrocious conditions

A hardcore of just 18 Stoke Rochford seniors turned out for last week’s Winter Warmer in the most atrocious conditions.

Torrential rain, puddled greens and a cold wind made play testing for those playing a betterball Stableford off 7/8ths handicap.

Winners, with 38 points, were Brian Ayto and Keith Dugmore.

Three pairs returned 37 points, second place on countback going to Brian White and Mick Rance and third on countback Peter Gill and Keith Eddy. Brian White is overall leader with 14 points, Keith Dugmore has 13, Brian Ayto 11 and four others have 10 points.

The club has also launched a series of seasonal offers for winter golfers including one-month Trial Taster membership for £50.

Club spokesman Chris Jones said: “It’s a great club to be a member of as the course is well renowned for its playability during the winter months, rarely using winter greens.”

“There is no joining fee and we promise a warm welcome to gentlemen, ladies and juniors finding out more about our membership packages.”

With four river holes over the Cringle Brook, the course hosts the Kymin, Howell Hare Open and the Midland Youths Championship, which is one of the seven English Golf Union qualifying competitions for the English Junior Team.

The course has also acted as host for the English Schools competitions and many county events.
