Seniors at Rutland County Golf Club have had en eye on the past and the immediate future with events at the club recently.

The club’s past captains’ day 2012, hosted by Tony Whiting, took place on a brilliant sunny day with a good field competing.

The course was in great condition and close scores were the order of the day with a new name on the trophy after Kevin Whittle won with 36 points. Maurice Arnold was second with 35.

Just days later, senior members ignored the rain to join John Phipps at the first tee for the Senior Captain’s Drive In. The incoming senior skipper, struck a fine 159m drive .

Despite the weather keeping the numbers participating in the Stableford down, some good scores were posted, with the honours being taken by in-form Arthur Dethick with a sparkling 40 points.

Dethick has bounced back from recent fitness problems and is now finishing the year with some great performances.

Results: 1st Arthur Dethick (40pts), 2nd David Lynas (36), 3rd Colin Brown (34 c/b).

l A good turnout for the November Medal at Rutland County saw many players completing their rounds before the promised rain arrived with many useful scores posted.

Taking advantage of excellent greens, tees and fairways, Alan Shuttleworth shot 78-12-66 to win the competition, narrowly ahead of Roger Overton’s 76-9-67 which also gave him best gross on the day.

David Rippin’s net 68 was just good enough to edge Andy Lawrence, Ray Caley and Martyn Gatehouse all on countback.

Phil Drury topped up his Christmas kitty by claiming birdies on the par-3 13th and 15th holes.

l Rutland County has launched its Lady Beginners initiative with 25 fledgling lady golfers receiving group lessons from club professional Jasen Barker.

Coaching is on Thursdays and Saturdays followed by a coffee morning in the clubhouse.

Club Manager, Steve Lowe said: “This is an excellent way for ladies to learn the basics of golf and meet new friends who also want to learn how to play the game.

“The atmosphere among the groups is great. Everyone is relaxed and enjoying themselves - just as it should be.”

The next beginners groups start in the new year along with a senior’s beginner group. For details call 0180 460330.
