Tony starts the year in stunning fashion

Tony Coulsey stunned his regular playing partners with a net 67 to win the first monthly medal of the year at Rutland County Golf Club.

Just back from warm-weather training in the Caribbean, Tony who is fit and raring to go this season, starts the year with a one-shot handicap reduction - now playing off 21.

Despite coming second with a net 68, Dave Waddell felt he could have done better, but Andy Lawrence was happy with his net 69 for third place and possibly even happier with his birdie at the 4th which gave him a bonus share of the 2’s fund.

Bob Haynes just pipped a gaggle of players on 71 by one shot for fourth place and was quick to compliment the greenstaff on the quality of the greens.

Despite the awful weather of the last six weeks, the course has not been closed

once, with all main greens and tees being used.

Four-handicapper Darren Child, who travels up from Kent every weekend to play the course, shot 77 for best gross.

Rutland County Seniors braved the elements for their “2 from 3” competition although not every group managed to complete their round.

The winning trio after countback with an impressive 89 points were: Alan Garner, John Rudin and Ron Snape.

Winter Doubles League results: John Phipps and Barry Maddock beat David Rippin and Peter Knowles 4&3. Terry Loomes and Stewart Picton lost to Maurice Arnold and Mike

Pell 3&2.

There was a good turnout for the first official seniors’ competition of the year, the January Stableford with good scoring and an outstanding return of 43 points from Mike Pell.

Results: Division 1 - 1st Ray Taylor (41), 2nd Kevin Whittle (39). Division 2 - 1st Mike Pell (43), 2nd Colin Brown (39 c/b).
