THE first league match to ever be held at Uppingham’s Castle Hill ground ended in the defeat for the hosts on Sunday.
Uppingham won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that look full of runs but after a good start, reaching 65 for 1, a bowling change resulted in Uppingham losing cheap wickets.
They finished on 150 for 9, a target which their Rutland League Division three opponents, Newborough rattled off with three wickets and 11 overs to spare.
Uppingham had done well to reach 150, after slumping to 109 for 9, with Alan Landers and captain Jamie Wild putting on 41 runs to reach the 150.
In reply, Newborough lost opener Bamber for 8 before Harris and Clingo added 72 for their second wicket with Uppingham dropping four catches.
Wild and Stuart Lambie took two wickets each Howe and young G Scott both supporting well with the ball.
A crowd of around 80 watched the game and Uppingham’s Adi Salt said: “We would like to thank all members and supporters who helped us enjoy the opening game at the Castle Hill ground and look forward to seeing you all during the 2011 season.
“There was great support from people from the town who came for the first game. It was great afternoon. All the efforts were well worth it.
“We had good, positive comments on the wicket, which I think will be a good batting track.”
Both Uppingham sides were promoted for this season, and the 1st XI began with a tough challenge in the Rutland League First Division at Barnack where they made just 76 in response to their hosts’ 163.
