Cup triumph to round off ladies’ year

Rutland Ladies 2nd XI rounded off the club’s year by brushing aside Ely’s 2nd XI with a 5-1 victory on Saturday.

The young Rutland team had lost a recent league encounter between the teams and after a slow start on Saturday went behind to an early goal.

After that early setback they then began to use the full width of the pitch with Rhona Kelly and Lucy Ginn controlling the midfield.

Lucy deservedly drew Rutland level, and they kept up the pressure with Alex Haggis slotting the ball past the keeper for the second.

Composed play from Fiona Ginn on the right released Charlie Crombie to add Rutland’s third before half time.

Ten minutes after the restart, Oonagh MacDonald began a move that ended up with a second goal for Haggis and, later in the half, Ella Brahmachari and Jess Hayward set up Fiona Ginn to add Rutland’s fifth.

Captain Jennifer Pollock is keen to continue to bring in new players and will hold a training session and games on January 5. Young players who want to get involved should e-mail club secretary (simon.cooper@rutlandhockeyclub.org.uk) in advance for details.

Rutland: Vicky Salt, Oonagh Macdonald, Jennifer Pollock, Rhona Kelly, Lucy Ginn, Jess Hayward, Alex Haggis, Fiona Ginn, Aisling Macdonald, Maeve Macdonald, Ella Brahmachari, Molly King, Charlie Crombie.
