Dragons roar into 2012 with first win

Bourne Deeping 3rd 2 City of Peterborough 7th 1

BOURNE Deeping Hockey club’s third team resumed league action a week ahead of the rest of the league with a 2-1 victory against Peterborough’s seventh string.

The match had been rearranged due to a postponement in the autumn and it gave the 3rd XI the chance to give The Dragons the perfect start to 2012.

Both sides started off a little scrappily after a long Christmas break but the Dragons gradually took control of the game.

BDHC won a short corner which they converted with some great play and a sweet finish by Rob Chorlton.

The Dragons played some superb hockey and had several great chances on goal but failed to convert them and went in half time just 1-0 ahead.

Peterborough came out strongly in the second half and pinned the Dragons back in their own half. However the BDHC hit back with some great play down the left from Ryan Bennett and Rich Arnold.

The crucial second goal soon came from a superb piece of skill from Andrew Dodds who slipped ball to Harry Oakley and he finished with excellent composure.

This gave the BDHC more drive and soon another chance came for the Dragons as some great play between Lewis Stedman lead to Joe Allen driving into the D, beating his marker and drawing the keeper out. He passed the ball to Andrew Dodds who flicked the ball straight at the goal but was denied by the shins of a Peterborough player standing on the line.

The umpire awarded a penalty flick which Dodds took but the Peterborough goalkeeper made an outstanding diving save.

This gave Peterborough a confidence boost and they quickly struck back to reduce the deficit.

However it was too late and Dragons kept hold of the ball to see out the game.

BDHC 3rd: Joe Allen, Joe Wray, Paul Curtis, Jo Gresty, Lewis Stedman, Rich Arnold, Ryan Bennett, Ben Walden, Rob Chorlton, Andrew Dodds, Harry Oakley, Brad Mansfield, Matt Clarkson.

l AMONG the highlights on the first full day of league fixtures is the inter-club derby between Bourne Deeping’s 3rd and 4th XIs who play in the same division.

Elsewhere the Ladies first team play Horncastle at home (at the Voyager School) and the men’s first time, who top their division, play Cambridge South away from home.
