Four-goal Rutland still exit Vase
Rutland Ladies lost a nine-goal thriller to go out of English Hockey’s National Vase at Stratford-upon-Avon on Sunday.
The team acquitted themselves well, in particular as the fixture came just 24 hours after a crucial league clash against Wisbech, but Rutland fell a little short, losing 5-4.
Rutland led 2-1 at the break with goals for Rachel Richardson, from the penalty spot, and Kate Stubbs. But Stratford had a strong period early in the second half and opened up a 4-2 lead.
Anne Pollock pulled one back for Rutland but the hosts quickly restored their two-goal advantage and although Charlie Gregg slammed in a Rutland fourth with a couple of minutes to play, Rutland could not find a way back.
A day earlier, Rutland were knocked off top spot in the Cambridgeshire League by Wisbech. Rutland created far more chances but lost 3-2.
Second-placed Rutland game host St Ives on Saturday.
