Ladies cruise to victory

Rutland Ladies 2nd XI beat St Ives Ladies 2nd XI 4-1, winning a spirited game on Saturday morning.

The Rutland ladies played some wonderful hockey, manoeuvring the ball from side to side, and connecting the ball from the defence to the forwards at will.

From one early attack down the right, Fiona Ginn opened the scoring.

Rutland, full of confidence, soon scored again through Maeve MacDonald.

St Ives played with one player high up the pitch, seeking to find her whenever possible and from one long ball they nicked a goal back before half time.

In the second half, Rutland continued to create gaps and move the ball around the pitch between the St Ives players.

With Penny Skipper controlling the ball well from the left half position, St Ives became frustrated, and the Rutland side were allowed to break with Charlie Crombie scoring a magnificent goal from a very tight angle.

The Rutland ladies now began to play with real freedom, and Crombie added a second. At the other end, Rutland’s defence kept the door firmly closed, with Tani Lanur playing a great game in goal, and Alex Haggis determined as always to keep up the momentum.

The men’s and ladies’ first teams do not play again until January but Rutland Ladies 2nds have one more game before the Christmas break, a cup tie against Ely in Uppingham on Saturday.

Rutland Ladies 2nd: Team: Tani Lanur (Gk), Oonagh Macdonald, Alice Cracknell, Rhona Kelly, Penny Skipper, Alex Haggis, Fiona Ginn, Charlie Crombie, Maeve Macdonald, Lucy Ginn, Jennifer Pollock.
