Rutland bag a cup win ahead of league re-run
Rutland Ladies won their first match of 2013 beating Oundle 6-4 in pool A of the Cambridgeshire Ladies League Cup.
After a lengthy Christmas break, Rutland were concerned how their fitness and skills would have been affected but their fitness held up well and they showed superior skills throughout this absorbing cup fixture.
For the first time this season, Rutland started well without conceding an early goal. This was undoubtedly down to the inspired decision by coach Simon Cooper to play Penny Skipper and Issy Chedd at full backs. They not only limited Oundle to just a few shots on goal but had the composure and skill to distribute the ball once they had won it.
Rutland quickly went 2-0 up, the second goal coming after Nikki Perry excellently pulled her defender away to allow a free shot from the top of the circle.
Oundle fought back to 2-1 but excellent hold-up play from Kerry Rough set up another free shot from the top of the circle to restore Rutland’s back a healthy lead.
After an entertaining first few minutes of the second half the match stood at 4-4 draw but Rutland were not deflated by Oundle’s resilience.
Sarah Sissins and Rough added two more goals to the Rutland tally and with Vicky Salt pulling off some excellent saves towards the end of the game Rutland held on to their lead.
Oundle visit Rutland next week for a league game and Rutland will hope to repeat this week’s performance.
