Rutland endure a tough day
Rutland Hockey Club’s men’s and women’s teams endured a tough day when action resumed after a two week due to snow.
The men conceded their fixture to East League 3NW leaders Wisbech Town 5-0 and both the ladies 1st and 2nd XI teams were also defeated.
The ladies 1st XI were beaten 3-1 in the cup at Newmarket, who were clearly out for revenge after Rutland had won the league encounter before the turn of the year.
Rutland were a little unsettled as the game began and, hemmed in their own half, it took the best of efforts of goalkeeper Philly Stubbs to keep Newmarket at bay.
But after 25 minutes, Newmarket eventually found a way past her and another goal soon followed. For Rutland, the half-time whistle couldn’t come quickly enough.
A quick rejig solved a couple of problems, with Sarah Sissins and Penny Skipper adapting to central midfield roles and showing some nice touches.
Kim Cooil pulled one back for Rutland but overall it remained a disjointed performance with little of the support play and calm control in possession that Rutland had used to such good effect in their previous appearances in 2013.
Coach Simon Cooper said: “Hopefully this can be put down to the lack of available game and practice time, and with training now restarted the girls will hope to get back on track with a good showing against St Ives this coming Saturday.”
Rutland Ladies 2nd XI lost by the same scoreline to Cambridge Nomads 2nd XI at Uppingham in their first game since Christmas.
Rutland got off to a cracking start with Lucy Ginn scoring in the first minute after Charlie Gregg fed the ball through a gap in the away side’s defence. But Cambridge responded well and drew level despite the determined play of Megan Wright and player-of-the-match Alice Scott.
Both teams had chances to add to the scoreline but it was the Nomads that took theirs, eventually running out 3-1 winners to seal top spot in the cup qualifying stage and sealing their place in the final in March.
