Rutland give lesson to university side

Rutland ladies beat Cambridge University 3rd XI 4-0 on Saturday.

Rutland visited the university for a Cup fixture only a few weeks ago and won by a single goal but they were much improved in this league encounter and this was reflected in the score line.

A well-rehearsed short corner routine broke the deadlock with the experienced trio of Kim Cooil, Katie Richardson and Anne Pollock combining to send the ball over the keeper’s head and into the back of the net.

Despite being ahead, Rutland were not watertight at the back and they were fortunate that Pippa Stubbs was alert in goal.

On one occasion, the University’s centre forward chased a seemingly unreachable ball and caught up with it just at the top of the circle much to the surprise of the Rutland team. Luckily for Rutland, Pippa Stubbs in goal was alert to the threat and successfully cleared the ball away.

At the other end, Pippa’s sister Kate calmly slotted the ball between the Cambridge keeper’s legs for her first goal of the season.

From this point Rutland dominated midfield and easily picked off the Cambridge attacks. They increased their lead further with another goal for Kate Stubbs and a great finish by Ella Brahmachari.

In the absence of any league game, Rutland Ladies 2nds hosted a friendly in Uppingham against Peterborough.

Peterborough were more alert to opportunities from the start and played strongly, resulting in two goals by half time.

Molly King ran past several Peterborough players to pull one back before the break.

Rutland were much improved in the Second half and Lucy Ginn beat the Peterborough keeper at the near postto level.

Peterborough had one last attack and retook the lead but Rutland didn’t give up and Ginn was there to score again.

It was a great display from a squad of 17 young players who showed determination and resilience to come back from a goal deficit at half time.

Rutland: Charlotte Brooks, Ellie Hemmings, Jess Hayward, Alex Haggis, Maddy Munro-Hall, Honor Munro-Hall, Oonagh Macdonald, Maeve Macdonald, Lucy Ginn, Fiona Ginn, Molly King, Charlie Crombie, Jennifer Pollock, Immy Bromwich, Becci Glover, Rhona Kelly and Alice Scott.
