Slideshow: Rutland reclaim top spot

Rutland Ladies returned to the top of the table with a 2-0 victory against St Ives 2nd XI at Uppingham on Saturday morning.

They put their cup defeat against Newmarket a week earlier behind them with Anne Pollock scoring twice in the first half.

In snowy conditions, St Ives pressed high up the pitch in the opening five or 10 minutes, pinning the Rutlanders back. Jen Pollock made a couple of important interceptions after possession had been given up in dangerous areas.

But the Rutland girls at the back were able to gloss over a couple of alarms with Charlotte Knight in particular picking out crisp accurate passes to the midfield.

As the visitors’ initial burst of energy petered out, Rutland blossomed. Sarah Sissins continually found herself in space on the right hand side, and the inside forwards Penny Skipper and Anne Pollock, both subject to some tight marking, looked dangerous once they slipped out of their opponents’ clutches.

From one fast break, Pollock smash home from close-ish range, and she found the net again from a short corner soon after.

A third or fourth before half time would not have flattered the home side with young Maeve MacDonald on her debut coming close.

St Ives broke into Rutland territory as the speed of Rutland’s support play dipped late in the first half but the second period was relatively even with Rutland rarely troubled.

The home side created few scoring opportunities of their own. There were a few penalty corners as the St Ives defence tired and their tackling became a little choppy but the Rutland routines, perhaps betraying a lack of recent practice, tended to break down.

The two sides meet again the weekend as Saturday’s game was a rearranged fixture from earlier in the season.

Rutland: Pippa Stubbs, Charlotte Knight, Jen Pollock, Katie Richardson, Kim Cooil, Sarah Sissins, Anne Pollock, Penny Skipper, Lucy Ginn, Nicki Perry, Fiona Ginn, Maeve MacDonald, Izzy Chedd.
