A TEN week cricket course for girls will be held in Uppingham.

Uppingham Town Cricket Club and the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Board will run an indoor course at Uppingham Community College, starting later this month.

Uppingham’s juniors’ coach Neil Wedge said: “We are appealing to girls all around Rutland.

“It’s not just an Uppingham specific thing. We’re just the hosts and what we hope to do is establish a Rutland-based girls team that draws on players from a number of clubs around the area.”

He added: “Developing girls’ cricket is one of the key criteria for the funding provided by the ECB to Uppingham for the new ground.”

The course is aimed at girls between the ages of 9 and 13, and organisers hope to have England internationals appear during the week course.

Until now, any girls wishing to play competitive cricket have had to play within the regular men’s leagues with Uppingham’s Rachel Richardson playing for the town’s 3rd team.

Places on the course will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.

Any girls who would like to continue playing cricket after the programme should contact Uppingham Town CC via neilwedge@uppinghamtowncc.co.uk.
